FIBC and BOPP Bags: Understanding the Difference

A request for a polypropylene bag can mean two very different things: a large bag moved with lifting equipment, or a smaller printed sack for a packaged product. Both may use woven fabric, but their size, construction and handling requirements need separate specifications.

What an FIBC does

FIBC stands for flexible intermediate bulk container. These bags hold individual loads of dry material and have lifting loops for suitable handling equipment. Choose the bag around the material, fill weight and equipment at both ends of the delivery.

Our bulk bag range includes U-panel, four-panel and circular constructions. The rated load, filling opening, discharge and liner belong on the specification. The name FIBC alone does not establish any of those details.

Where the name Super Sack comes in

Super Sack? is a registered trademark of United Bags, Inc. Buyers sometimes use the term loosely, but it identifies another company's branded product. When requesting a Transcontinental bag, use FIBC or bulk bag and include the required specification.

What BOPP describes

BOPP means biaxially oriented polypropylene, a film used in packaging. In a laminated woven sack, printed BOPP film forms the outer layer over the woven fabric. The film and fabric have different jobs: one carries the graphics and surface finish, while the other forms the sack structure.

This format is associated with packaged products such as feed, seed and rice. A printed appearance does not tell you the load rating, moisture protection or food-contact suitability; ask for the specification for the finished sack.

BOPP sacks are explained here for comparison; they are not a confirmed product in our current catalogue. For smaller industrial sacks, see our woven polypropylene valve sacks and ask which printing options are available.

If your material travels in bulk before being packed for sale, you may use both formats at different stages. Write a separate brief for each. A printing requirement for a retail sack should not be carried over as though it were a lifting specification for a bulk bag.

Once the format is clear, our quote-request guide explains what to send a supplier. Include a drawing or sample reference when you have one, and identify any detail that still needs to be agreed.
